A modern benefits solution for the ‘not being sick bonus’
Van Dijnsen is a total installer that offers a complete service, with advice, design, and maintenance of building installations. Van Dijnsen is a family business, but distinguishes itself by tackling projects that are usually handled by larger companies. They have both office workers and field staff, who provide advice, create projects, and maintain projects.
Van Dijnsen had a great benefits package; employees received a profit-sharing bonus, a good pension plan, and were celebrated on a work anniversary. However, there was one thing that Bianca van den Tol, HR manager at Van Dijnsen, encountered.
An old-fashioned solution for a timeless problem
Van Dijnsen had a ‘not being sick bonus’, where colleagues received a reward if they hadn’t been sick for a year. But colleagues who had been sick naturally did not receive that bonus. Bianca found this too old-fashioned.
Even though the bonus was used to combat absenteeism, it did not achieve the results that Van Dijnsen aimed for. Additionally, Bianca also noticed that the bonus only reached a small part of the organization. Sometimes, you just can't prevent getting sick.
It was time for a different approach
Van Dijnsen sought an alternative to the bonus. They wanted to focus on health management instead of absenteeism management. By focusing on the health of employees, they hoped to reduce absenteeism at Van Dijnsen at the same time.
"We wanted to focus much more on preventing absenteeism. We actually wanted to move from absenteeism management to health management. So not, when people are sick, looking ‘what are we going to do?’, but, ‘how can we do more to reduce absenteeism? Therefore, we started looking around for providers.” - Bianca van den Tol, HR manager at Van Dijnsen
She found YourCampus and it was exactly what she was looking for. It was a solution that fit the entire, diverse employee base and aligned beautifully with the values 'social and involved' of Van Dijnsen.
Especially the fact that YourCampus is a platform that offers benefits from many different partners matched perfectly. Finding individual providers wasn’t particularly the issue. Finding one place for everything that offers benefits that excite 160 employees was a challenge.
Furthermore, there are employees ranging from 17 to 65 years old. There are employees who work in the office and those in field services. And there are both men and women employed. A diverse group indeed, not to mention the trainees and career changers at Van Dijnsen.
Focusing on vitality
“What we hope to achieve is a sense of involvement from the employees. That our colleagues also realize that we focus on their vitality. We really use the app for effort and relaxation. We have also been able to make a choice with YourCampus among the various providers that offer that aspect of vitality. From physical effort to mental relaxation.” - Bianca van den Tol
In the YourCampus app, employees can make conscious choices. For example, by shopping at stores that offer sportswear or selecting fresh meals, so they can be relieved of that at home.
“We also have the option for employees to submit their own expense claims. We see that this is already a great success.” - Bianca van den Tol
Results
After a few months, about half of the employees are using the YourCampus app. “For us, it would be a great success if everyone makes use of the budget. We deliberately chose to let the budget expire after a year, so that employees are at least consciously engaged with their vitality once a year.”
Bianca mainly hopes that employees can focus on their health in a conscious manner. If they can also reduce absenteeism with this, it’s truly a win-win situation for Bianca.
